Advocates for Children has a hotline that can answer questions you have about re-enrollment and your legal rights as a student. They also run a website, www.insideschools.org, where you can research NYC public schools.

The New York City Department of Education's website can lead you to information about schools, transferring, some GED programs and the school calender.

Laguardia College offers a variety of GED-prep courses for young adults and adults interested in a GED-college combination program.

BMCC (the Borough of Manhattan Community College) offers a similar program where students earn their GEDs and earn college credits.


Looking for a job?

Are you between the ages of 14 and 21? The Department of Youth and Community Development's Summer Youth Employment Program hires 1,000 teens every summer for a month of work.

Hello Brooklyn has a helpful list of different organizations in Brooklyn that can help you find a job.

The Door is a non-profit organization that offers job-readiness training for teenagers. Participants develop a work portfolio and are prepared to earn the National Work Readiness Credential. Young people who are prepared to seek placements move into the Door's CITE program which provides job placement.

Idealist.com lets you search for jobs in NYC by location, type of job, and area of focus.

City Limits also runs a job listing site for NYC non-profit jobs.

The Brooklyn Job Corps Academy will train you and help you find employment in the fields of security, web design, computer repair and maintenance, the culinary arts, and medical records managment all while earning your GED.

The Red Hook Community Justice Center also runs two additional programs for young people.

  • Youth Court, trains young people to serve as the judge, jury, defense and prosecutor for the peers in low-level crimes.
  • The Red Hook Photography Project provides youth with training and experience taking photographs, discussing their work, and creating a portfolio.

Red Hook Initiative, Red Hook Rise, Hook Productions, and Added Value all offer great programs for Red Hook teens.
