What is Youth ECHO?

Youth ECHO is a group of dedicated Red Hook teenagers who want to use their voices to speak out and take action on the issues that directly affect their lives.

The 8-month program focuses on leadership and community organizing and will introduce important information and tools to you and other young people so you feel ready and able to take action on the issues and realities of your lives.  We will look at how Red Hook youth are affected by policing and jails, schools, health and other public policies.  You will work with guerilla marketing professionals around the city to design and execute a message campaign to take your ideas to other Red Hook teens. The program will provide you with the space, tools, and support you need to think about and create the kinds of neighborhood change you want.

What will I be doing in the program?

The program will meet twice a week for two hours.  It has three main goals:

  1. To train young people to speak up effectively for themselves and other Red Hook youth.
  2. To involve young people in the debates and decision-making processes that affect their lives.
  3. To provide youth with access to and training in a variety of different marketing and organizing methods.

We watch movies, learn about the history of Red Hook and how it relates to New York City, take trips to museums, businesses and programs around the city, discuss the things we learn, and design projects to express our thoughts, ideas, and concerns.  In addition to the four program hours each week, program staff is available every day to help you with homework, resumes and cover letters, college and scholarship applications, finding summer jobs, and all the other things on your mind.

What do I get?

We hire 15 youth between the ages of 13 to 18. We hire new and returning program participants. In addition to building your resume and having strong references, Community Organizers (youth 13-15) are paid $50 every two weeks and Community Leaders (youth 16-18) are paid $65 every two weeks.  We have periodic contests with other prizes, like movie passes and gift cards, and there is a snack at every session.
